Someone I Love Has a Monster is a children's book written by Melanie J. Hartman. In July 2011, Melanie was diagnosed with poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

During the first year of her diagnosis, Melanie was inspired to write a book with her children Reid (6) and Autumn (4). They were Melanie's source of courage, motivation and influence. This book would not have been possible without them.

The goal of the book is to provide assistance to families on how to talk to young children about cancer, the treatments and the side effects while being gentle and entertaining enough that the children will be engaged in the book.

All of the dialogue in the book was inspired by conversations initiated by Reid and Autumn. The book is written in such a way that it is applicable to any friend or family member and any type of cancer.

The copy and illustrations for Someone I Love has a Monster were completed in early 2013. Melanie fought a courageous battle. Her determination, courage and inspiration moved individuals and communities across the world. She passed away from her diagnosis on April 15, 2013 at Abbot Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

With support from friends and family, Derek and Rhian Rotz, Melanie's brother and sister-in-law promised to Melanie, that they would complete the book project. In her honor, they're committed to being the messengers of her story about love, caring and sharing.

Melanie viewed the book a pay it forward deed for all that her friends and family did during her battle. Her hope was that other families will benefit from the resource. Copies of the book will be shared with cancer centre's around the county to be provided to families who have both small children and a recent cancer diagnosis.
